The lower bridge in Bamberg is a popular place – not only for passers-by, but also for young people who want to meet there for an after-work beer and get in the mood for the night. The high footfall on the bridge requires special lighting, which was newly integrated into the old structure in 2017. The aim of the new lighting concept was to optimally illuminate the walkway and at the same time to enable facial recognition of passers-by in the dark. To achieve this, Bergmeister Leuchten developed a luminaire housing that includes LED modules as well as a reflector plate, resulting in slightly indirect lighting from the luminaire housing upwards. Compared to the bridge’s previous luminaires, this has resulted in a significant improvement in the lighting level.
The project brief was to preserve the historic bridge in Bamberg without altering it with the new luminaires. Old recesses in the concrete of the lower bridge already existed and the new luminaires had to fit precisely into these existing openings. The luminaires from Bergmeister Leuchten were therefore specially designed and customised for this purpose. At the same time, the existing installation had to be retained, i.e. old drill holes had to be taken into account during installation.
As the narrow light emission surfaces of the previously installed luminaires were regularly covered in stickers, the new luminaires were given an anti-poster coating. A durable anti-poster coating now protects the impact-resistant PMMA cover from vandalism. This coating on the PMMA cover was specially developed for this project.
