Dance of the lights
Just a few years ago, the dreariness of the railway station district, today a boulevard with an extraordinary quality of life. With the redesign of the ‘New Mile’, the city of Böblingen has set an example of courageous urban development. The harmony of material and form is a success, as is the unique lighting concept: a series of light rings above the heads of passers-by. The light rings were designed by the landscape architecture firm bauchplan ).( together with the lighting designers from Lumen³. Bergmeister Leuchten realised the holistic project management – from the technical implementation to the cable tensioning.
Dramaturgy on granite
Asymmetrically arranged, the 2.35 metre ring lights float between the rows of houses. An elaborate customised design from the Bergmeister lighting manufacturer, equipped with state-of-the-art LED technology. In the dark, islands of light emerge on the grey granite pixel parquet, transforming the Mile into a dramatic platform.
Light rings made from semi-transparent plastic
The lights are made of semi-transparent plastic (PMMA). Two lighting systems are combined inside: RGB LED strips ensure a homogeneous appearance. For events or special occasions, they can be optionally colour-controlled. Narrow-beam spotlights form the clearly recognisable, warm islands of light on the floor. In daylight, the light rings do not disappear into insignificance; the sunlight creates a sophisticated shadow play of the rings in the passageway.
The following video gives you an insight into the production of the light rings.
Light steles on the station forecourt
The promenade leads into the station forecourt, which has also been redesigned. Vividly arranged light steles from Bergmeister Leuchten break up the austerity of the station forecourt in Böblingen.
A promenade to linger on
The ‘Neue Meile’ in Böblingen is a place to slow down in a hectic world. Granite stones in three shades of colour are laid at right angles to the direction of traffic. The street furniture invites people to linger, communicate and use it intuitively. A loose arrangement of seating organises the promenade.
Futuristic furniture to match the luminaire
The futuristic benches and chairs are made of thermo-treated ash wood and powder-coated steel. They were manufactured in an extensive project together with the floating ring lights in the Bergmeister light manufactory.
