HÜRTH PARK – A PLACE UNDER LIGHT TREES

Hürth Park near Cologne is a 45-year-old shopping centre. The partially covered outdoor area with a length of almost 1,000 metres and more than 150 shops was revamped in 2021 and received new lighting as part of the project. The Cologne-based office a-g Licht GbR was involved in analysing the existing lighting concept. Bergmeister Leuchten specified the luminaires according to the design and structural specifications.

A central idea accompanied the planning: The search was on for symbols that could establish a link to nature in Hürth Park. Part of this concept are tree sculptures as luminaires, under which you can find peace and quiet on benches, as you used to under the lime tree in the centre of the village. There are also a kind of oversized floor lamps between the tables flanking the cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlours. Large, flat rings of light hover above the covered areas.

One theme runs through all the lighting objects: the vertical slats, once as a stylised tree crown, once as a lampshade. The planners would have liked to make the tree sculptures more delicate, but the statics put paid to this idea. The reason for this is the wind forces that prevail due to the construction of the buildings and could exert large forces of movement, says Yvonne Goldschmidtböing (a-g Licht).

The lighting technology in the Hürth Park luminaires was chosen so that the lighting can follow the course of daylight. This idea was realised using Tunable White, which can be used to control the change from warm white to cool white colour temperature depending on the position of the sun. At the centre of each luminaire is a cylinder with an opal Plexiglas body that produces a soft, diffuse light. All supports and static elements of the luminaires are made of steel. The vertical metal louvres echo the look of the wooden benches.
