Bergmeister Leuchten, in collaboration with Licht Kunst Licht, have illuminated the Goldkammer in Frankfurt am Main with a special lighting development. The museum was awarded the German Lighting Design Award 2020.
Gold: A meteor shower once brought this precious metal to Earth, captivating humanity since its first discovery. The architectural firm AS+P Albert Speer + Partner from Frankfurt and the exhibition designers merz merz Architekten from Berlin have dedicated a museum to this special ore, perfectly situated in the heart of the financial metropolis of Frankfurt am Main. Licht Kunst Licht has devised an extensive lighting concept for the impressive exhibition space and its unique exhibits. The journey begins in the atrium with a special light fixture developed in collaboration with Bergmeister Leuchten.
Set into the three cassettes of the ceiling, which are also indirectly illuminated with light coves, a total of 90 examples of the specially designed pendant light brighten the space, creating an opulent entrance for visitors. The simple design of the pendant light is inspired by a miner’s lamp that guided workers in the tunnels. While traditional lamps operated on petroleum or gas and featured a glowing wick, the cylinder of the custom light fixture by Bergmeister Leuchten is fitted with a brass mesh that reflects the light from the LEDs. Crafted from hand-polished tombak—a specialty of Bergmeister Leuchten—this design visually connects to the element of gold.
The shine of the light fixtures, the pleasant warm white light at 3,000 Kelvin, and the harmonious interplay of materials and colors create an inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to linger in the Aureus Café, the day bar, and the in-house restaurant.
